Part of the magic of the Museum is its breathtaking campus and vast array of specimen trees. This year’s Raise Your Bid will provide financial support for tree planting and the on-going care and feeding of the Museum’s mature and notable trees.

Following the Live Auction, Trustee Jeff Cooley will invite guests to support the Museum’s Master Tree Plan and help to provide the planting and care of trees on this beloved historic site. By raising your bid paddle, you will be agreeing to donate $100 (or more if you like) to this important “green” initiative. We hope you will participate— thank you for your support!

1IrvineWEBOil, 24 x 18 inches. Born in Illinois, Wilson Henry Irvine showed an early talent for drawing. By 1895, he was enrolled in classes at The Art Institute of Chicago. By 1900, Irvine was exhibiting landscapes and becoming actively involved in the Chicago art community. He spent summers in Lyme from 1914-1917 where he became closely affiliated with the Lyme Art Colony and permanently moved to Lyme in 1918. His works are in many public collections, including The Florence Griswold Museum.

This magical assemblage exhibits a mystifying and enchanting scene revolving around the figure of Ionia, a 19th-century magician. The back of this piece has a photo and signature from contemporary magician Ron Saylor who is being featured at the benefit.

In 1955 he traveled to Florence, Italy, where he studied with famed painters Pietro Annigoni and Nerina Simi. He continues to work in the United States, Italy, France, Switzerland, and the Bahamas. Nelson has exhibited his work throughout the world and is represented in numerous private and public collections, including the Florence Griswold Museum.

Simkovitch was born near Kiev, Russia and later attended an art school in Odessa before graduating from the Imperial Academy of St. Petersburg in 1918. He was sent to the United States in 1924 to do illustrations for Soviet textbooks and gained U.S. citizenship. Simkovitch integrated with the art world immediately and had a successful career in America. He executed major mural commissions throughout the country. Considered a master draftsman and an adherent of a certain classicism, he is at heart a romanticist preferring the dreamy colors of a Russian fairy tale.
