Simple images of animals and of the people that he loves are placed on abstract backgrounds created by overlays of large frantic brush strokes in bold colors. Since 2000 he has exhibited in solo shows and group exhibitions in the United States, Germany, France, Denmark, Holland, Bulgaria, and Italy.

He studied painting at the School of Visual Arts and The Cooper Union and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Brooklyn College, New York in 2008. His series of paintings 48 Jews and The Great Americans employ portraiture to question basic assumptions about the relationship of historical memory and collective identity. These works have been shown in several museums across the United States, including The Great Americans exhibition on view at FGM earlier this year.

Broom was a featured artist of FGM’s In Place: Contemporary Photographers Envision a Museum exhibition in 2016.

He also attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program. He is an Honorary Fellow of Falmouth University in the UK and has a Doctor of Humane Letters (Ph.D.) from the Wagner Free Institute of Science in Philadelphia. Dion has received numerous awards for his works which have appeared in many exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe, most recently in FGM’s Fragile Earth: The Naturalist Impulse in Contemporary Art.

Frederick R. Wagner (1864-1940)

Pastel, 10 1/2 x 8 inches. Born in Port Kennedy, PA in 1864, Frederick R. Wagner enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he served as chief demonstrator of anatomy to the life classes and studied under Thomas Eakins. He then traveled to California where he began painting before returning to Philadelphia and taking a job as illustrator for the Philadelphia Press. He often painted impressionist urban scenes and in 1912 founded the Addington School of Painting. His modernist work is sought after by many collectors of the avant-garde movement.

Her work has been published in American Artist Drawing and The Journal of the American Medical Association. She also designed the seal for the Town of Old Lyme. Catherine has exhibited her work throughout the Northeast, New York City, and Los Angeles.

Courtney Mattison received a Bachelor of Arts degree in marine ecology and ceramic sculpture from Skidmore College and a Master of Arts degree in environmental studies from Brown University with coursework at the Rhode Island School of Design. Now based in Los Angeles, Mattison creates intricately detailed ceramic sculptural works inspired by the fragile beauty of coral reefs and the human-caused threats they face. Her work has been exhibited throughout the world to raise awareness for the protection of the oceans. This piece was featured in the exhibition Fragile Earth: The Naturalist Impulse in Contemporary Art, which was on view at FGM June 1 – September 8, 2019.

Goliath Orietalis with feathers under a domed cloche, 7 x 9 inches, 2019. Jennifer Angus is a professor of Design Studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Canada and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and Spain. Angus specializes in transforming historic spaces and blank gallery walls with a confounding medium: preserved exotic insects as seen in FGM’s historic boarding house during Fragile Earth: The Naturalist Impulse in Contemporary Art exhibit. (Her installation remains on view until November 10, 2019.) This insect under cloche is an example from that exhibit.
