What We Know About What They Wore: Decoding Dress in Early American Folk Art
Brenda Rosseau, Manager, Costume Design Center
The clothing worn by sitters of portraits can be as important as their likeness and pose in conveying meaning. In this lecture, costume historian Rosseau will analyze the folk art portraits, decoding their dress and other personal affects, while dressing curator Amy Kurtz Lansing and son Henry to resemble “Mother and Child” a painting by Ammi Phillips, circa 1825.
