An Artist Among Scientists: Frederic Church and Nineteenth-Century Landscape Painting

July 16, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

$5.00 – $7.00

Jennifer Raab, Assistant Professor, Department of the History of Art, Yale University

One of the most famous painters in the United States during the nineteenth century, Frederic Church created monumental landscapes of North and South America, the Arctic, and the Middle East that were celebrated for their extraordinary attention to detail. Drawing from her new book on the artist, Jennifer Raab will discuss how these works of art reveal Church’s deep engagement with natural history, scientific theories, and nascent ecological ideas.
