Annual Samuel Thorne Memorial Lecture 2023

Contemporary artist and Connecticut resident Alexis Rockman will offer this year’s Samuel Thorne Memorial Lecture on Saturday, November 4 at 1:30pm at The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook.
Earlier this year, Rockman completed Oceanus, a colossal 8-by-24-foot painting for the Mystic Seaport Museum’s permanent collection. As of May 27, the commission is unveiled along with 10 sumptuous large-scale watercolors in their Thompson Building. The painting features a visual timeline of ocean exploration through twenty-two painted marine crafts, (sixteen from the Seaport’s collection), as well as a beguiling underwater panorama teaming with marine life.
Rockman’s Thorne Lecture will showcase the Seaport’s exhibition and highlight the artist’s other creative output that often confronts viewers with timely cultural issues such as the biodiversity crisis, global warming, ocean pollution, and marine invasive species. A book signing of Alexis Rockman: Oceanus, a 160-page publication documenting the installation, will conclude the event.
