Annual Samuel Thorne Memorial Lecture: Recording the Language Word by Word

November 10, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Say the word “dictionary” and people imagine a hallowed book, given to us from on high, the place where language is codified for the ages. But the dictionary, just like the language, changes—new words are added, old words are taken out, and the dictionary has moved from print to the web. Join lexicographer and bestselling author Kory Stamper of Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries as she explains what it takes to update a dictionary and shares some hilarious pitfalls of “the harmless drudge,” Samuel Johnson’s tepid definition of the lexicographer.

This lecture is held in Fellowship Hall at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, 2 Ferry Road, Old Lyme. Reservations required, please call (860) 434-5542, ext. 111 or email frontdesk@flogris.org. A book signing concludes the event.
