Free Day

May 2, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

On Saturday, May 2 from 10am to 5pm, the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme opens free to everyone for this 12th annual community day. It is the only day each year the Museum is open without charge to all to celebrate spring and showcase its summer offerings to the public.

It is a great time to gather family and friends for a day of exciting programs, exceptional art, and beautiful views. Visitors of all ages will enjoy exploring the exhibition, Peter Halley: Big Paintings, wandering through historic gardens, playing gallery games, making art, visiting an artist’s studio, or just strolling along the Lieutenant River.

There are plenty of special activities too! Visitors can create a variety of hands-on craft projects from 11am to 4pm, take home a one-of-a-kind treasure from April’s Balloon Creations at no charge, from 11am to 3pm, and be amazed by the magic shows of Brian Miller at 11:30am and 2:30pm. There’s even a Looking-to-Learn Tour for families at 1pm.

Visitors can also enjoy the restored Griswold House, where artists painted directly on the doors and wall panels over one hundred years ago – there’s no other place like it in America!

“Our annual Free Day is a very popular event,” stated David D.J. Rau, Director Education and Outreach. “Many people are first-time visitors. The variety of fun and educational activities are a wonderful introduction to all we have to offer.”
