History Program: Meeting Maggie$5 – $7
Meeting Maggie: The Irish Immigrant Experience on the Connecticut Shoreline, featuring Leslie Evans, Historian and Director of the Avery-Copp House Museum, Groton, CT
Immigrants have been arriving on the shores of New England since before the Mayflower brought the Pilgrims in 1620. In the nineteenth century, ship after ship brought more than a million people from Ireland, desperate to seek a fresh start and a new life in America. History tells us about the social and economic trends that drove immigration, but how did it really feel to those who experienced it? This time travel program will introduce you to Maggie Sullivan, an immigrant from County Cork who was living in Connecticut in 1919. Listen to stories about her trip across the ocean, the challenges of adjusting to a new culture, details of her job as a domestic servant in Groton.
Linger after the program to ask questions and enjoy some traditional Irish treats baked by Maggie!
