LECTURE: Beyond the Manifest Imaginary
November 3, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Currier & Ives, the Romance of Empire, and the Real History of the American West
$10 (members $8)
with Professor Peter L. Bayers, Director of American Studies, Fairfield University
Hybrid On Site & Online Format
As mass media producers, Currier & Ives shaped popular imaginings of the American West in the 19th century through their lithographs, the legacy of which permeates how U.S. citizens “know” the history of the American West. This interactive talk will address how the Currier & Ives lithographs romanticized U.S. expansion west in order to justify Westward expansion, in turn obfuscating the complex, destructive, violent, and genocidal history of the American West.
