Lecture: The Enticing Gaze – From Leonardo to Sargent
June 12, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
$5.00 – $7.00
What transforms a painting into a celebrity? Leonardo’s Mona Lisa and Sargent’s Madame X each create a dynamic visual relationship that engages the viewer in a series of unanswered questions. Who is she? What is she thinking? What is the story behind the image? During the Renaissance, people believed that a painting contained a divine force that made the absent present, and the dead alive. While we may no longer invite a portrait to dinner, we do actively engage with a painted image. What makes a painting speak? Featuring Dr. Sunnie Evers, Art Historian.
