Lecture: Washing Day: The Longest Day of the Victorian Week

Leslie Evans, Director of the Avery-Copp House Museum, Groton, CT

This event is free but registration is required! Sign up here.

Monday was the traditional wash day in most American homes during past centuries, and it was recognized as the hardest work of the housekeeping week. This image of Florence Griswold’s wash house looks peaceful, but to those involved it would have told a very different story. Find out who did the laundry at Miss Florence’s boarding house, what equipment and cleaning products they used, and the modern technology that was soon to change laundry forever.

Breta Longacre (1887-1923)
Miss Florence’s House Seen from the Back, ca. 1916
Oil on Canvas, 20×30 in
Gift from three of Breta’s grandchildren in honor of her daughter Breta Eleanor DelMar Revill
The lecture will take place virtually via GoTo Webinar and a link to access the event will be sent when participants register.
