Letters from a Sea Captain’s Wife

July 12, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Carolyn Wakeman, Historian

Packet ship captains like Robert H. Griswold from Lyme acquired wealth and celebrity carrying prominent passengers, along with mail, freight, and immigrants, on regularly scheduled voyages across the Atlantic. Plaintive letters from Helen Powers Griswold during her husband’s long absences reveal the demands placed on wives left behind. An outsider in Lyme’s tightly-knit society and a newcomer in the prominent Griswold family, Helen spent solitary evenings in her elegant mansion house writing to her “dear, dear husband.”
