  • COVID-19 Update--Dear Friends, as part of the effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, we have closed the Museum to the public through at least April 30, and have cancel all programs during this time. We’re looking forward to welcoming you to the Museum soon (and often!), but until then, we encourage you to visit the Artists’ Trail, a half-mile walk around the Museum’s riverfront landscape and gardens. Check our website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) to stay up-to-date about the Museum’s status and enjoy beautiful images, on-line exhibitions, fun facts, and behind-the-scenes videos. Should you need a staff member, call or email them as usual. Please stay in touch, Your FloGris Friends

Liberty in America – From Infancy to Empire

Fridays, 3-5pm
February 7–April 17
$250 (members $225)
no refunds after January 15, 2020

Join Dr. Matthew Warshauer, Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University to explore the history and meaning of liberty in America. Take a deep dive into the beginnings of the great experiment in popular government, from infancy to empire.

How do we define liberty? Is it liberty from…or liberty to…? Who gets to decide and how has the notion of liberty been modified throughout the life of our nation? The class will have the opportunity to explore important primary documents and images that speak to the importance of liberty as a guiding force in America’s past and present.

Dr Warshauer holds a Ph.D in American Studies from St. Louis University and is a professor at Central Connecticut State University. He is the author of four books, two on Andrew Jackson and two on Connecticut and the Civil War. He is currently working on several projects, including a book that focuses on the meaning of 9/11.
