Greenwich-based artist Dmitri Wright takes nature as his muse in five large, colorful paintings made outdoors (en plein air) at two locations that have inspired Connecticut impressionists: the FloGris Museum and the Weir Farm National Historical Park. Growing up in the urban environment of Newark, New Jersey, Wright’s mother taught him to “travel through books.” Later he received traditional academic art training from schools in New Jersey and New York before deciding to follow his passion for Impressionism and explore the world by traveling and painting.

Through vibrant color and dynamic gesture, the paintings on view encapsulate what Wright calls his “jazzical approach” to representation. As he explains: “I follow my passion to see where it takes me.” The results are expressive landscape paintings that straddle naturalism and abstraction, or “mindscapes,” as the artist calls them. Wright has asked himself:

“What if I turn a flower into a gesture?”
