The Hartford Steam Boiler’s Fine Art Collection was developed by Chairman Emeritus Wilson Wilde, who intended to highlight and preserve the works of artists who painted in Connecticut. His dedication to this vision resulted in an extraordinary collection that captures the pastoral beauty of Connecticut. The works span a period from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries with a particular focus on American Impressionism, containing paintings by Childe Hassam, John Henry Twatchtman and J. Alden Weir, and Connecticut natives Frederic Edwin Church and Charles Ethan Porter, among others.
The Hartford Steam Boiler’s donation of this collection to the Florence Griswold Museum recognizes the historical significance of the Museum itself as the site of an important American Impressionist art colony to which many of the artists in this collection belonged. This 143-page catalogue includes an essay on the history of the Hartford Steam Boiler Collection and 51 color plates with notes on each of the artists. A final section of this volume displays half-tones of every work in the collection.
