HANDS-ON WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS: Heritage of Hope: Education Embraced
April 5 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

with Ed Johnetta Miller, Textile Artist
$50 (Members 10% discount); Limited to 20 participants
Join Miller for a hands-on, minds-on workshop to create a social justice collage delving into the history of enslavement in Connecticut. This workshop is a meaningful opportunity to explore the history of enslavement and free Black communities in Connecticut and beyond by focusing on the experiences of the young Black women attended Prudence Crandall’s Canterbury Female Boarding School. While the school was short-lived, it was a success as the students went on to become leaders, activists, and educators in their communities.
Participants will engage in creative expression through various mediums, which can facilitate a deeper understanding and reflection on this complex history. The use of images, words, repurposed fabric scraps and found objects allow for a personal and communal exploration of themes of social justice, memory, and resilience. This workshop is a great way to honor the past while fostering discussions about its impact on the present.
A gifted teacher, Ed Johnetta has received many awards for her role as an artist and community leader, including Connecticut’s most prestigious artistic award, The Governor’s Award. She has dedicated her time and resources to teaching and organizing community projects.
All materials included.
