“Everybody in my family paints—excluding possibly the dogs”
-Jamie Wyeth

Each week this short course, presented virtually via ZOOM, will focus on a different member of the multi-generational Wyeth family of artists. Often considered out of step with the mainstream of the American art world, each for various reasons, the Wyeths maintained their staunch independence from the passing stylistic movements of the twentieth century. A look into the lives and careers of these five artists explores the ways in which each coped with their struggles, from the stigma of illustration, to gender-based discrimination, to the shadows cast by famous relatives. While each artist held fast to realism at the core of their practice, experiments in abstraction, fantasy, and surrealism bubble up within their work. A family resemblance emerges that is better understood in the context of their closest critics, teachers, and influences, all of whom just happen to share the same last name.

Amanda C. Burdan, Ph.D. is the Senior Curator at the Brandywine Museum of Art. Prior to her appointment, she was the Associate Curator at Florence Griswold Museum, when she hosted several sell-out Winter Studies courses during her time at FloGris Museum. Welcome back (virtually) Amanda!
