Mary Cassatt, born in Pennsylvania and trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, challenged traditional expectations and travelled to Europe to find her independence as a professional artist. She became a celebrated member of the French Impressionists and is known for her intimate depictions of women and children. The talk draws on the Mary Cassatt at Work exhibition, currently on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to examine Cassatt’s engagement with the realities of gender and labor in her portrayal of traditionally feminine activities and consider her within the broader Impressionist movement.
